Reputation and Standing

Two reputation-adjacent scores track a character's relationship with the communities around them: Village Standing (one per village, earned locally) and Trevalkaan Civic Standing (city-wide, earned through civic contribution). They use similar tier structures but different earn paths and are never combined into a single score.

Village Standing

Village Standing is a per-village score that reflects how much a local community trusts and recognises the character. It is earned primarily through completing branch board work and responding to village events. It is independent of Hall rank — a low-rank character who has worked Arujoki's board for months will have high Arujoki Standing regardless of their Hall credentials.

Tiers

Tier Label Threshold
0 Stranger 0
1 Known 50
2 Trusted 200
3 Honored 500
4 Rooted 1,000

Earning Points

Action Points
Completing an F or E branch board order +1
Completing a D or C branch board order +2
Completing any order during an active village event +3 (bonus, stacks with base)
Completing the village's intro arc (non-origin village only) +15
Completing a named village event (Mine Collapse, Ford Sabotage, etc.) +10–20 depending on scale
Delivering to the village during Supply Critical or Failing state +5 (bonus, stacks with base)

Decay

Village Standing does not decay at Known (tier 1). At Trusted and above, inactivity on that village's board causes the standing to enter a Fading sub-state after a grace period. Fading does not reduce the standing tier label or remove tier unlocks — the character remains Trusted or Honored or Rooted — but halves the passive bonuses (discounts and advance-notice perks) until the player completes one qualifying local action. One qualifying action (any board order, shortage delivery, or event response for that village) clears the Fading flag immediately and resets the grace period.

Tier Grace Period Fading Effect
Trusted (2) 14 real days Discounts halved; village-exclusive items still accessible
Honored (3) 10 real days Discounts halved; Elder advance-notice disabled
Rooted (4) 7 real days Discounts halved; all Elder perks disabled; favor token offers paused

Fading does not stack across multiple tiers. A character at Honored who has been inactive for 12 days is Fading (Trusted grace period passed) but the Honored tier label and threshold are preserved. Sustained neglect — inactivity beyond the grace period of every tier the character holds — compounds Fading effects but does not drop the character through a tier boundary.

The character's board profile displays a subtle Fading indicator when active, so the player sees the state and knows that one qualifying action clears it. The indicator is intentionally low-friction: it does not block access, trigger a lock, or penalize Hall rank.

Completing any local qualifying action resets both the Fading flag and the grace period timer.

Unlocks by Tier

Tier Unlocks
Known (1) Village branch board accessible without Trevalkaan Hall credentials. 5% discount on local NPC services.
Trusted (2) 10% discount on local services. Access to village-exclusive items (e.g., Arujoki smoked eel kit, Rumiarr assay token, Metsadu codex excerpt). Village Elder sends advance notice when a new event generates — the branch board message appears one tick before the public Hall alert.
Honored (3) 15% discount. Invitation to village-exclusive seasonal activities. Can post a standing bounty referencing this village as a Village Aid order (auto-elevated to Urgent tier on the Hall board). Extended NPC dialog options across all village NPCs.
Rooted (4) 20% discount. Village Elder personally flags the character before any escalation event resolves — one full settlement tick of advance notice. All village NPCs treat character as a known quantity: favor token offers, priority on limited-supply items, and personal notification rather than board post for time-critical opportunities.

Notes

  • Village Standing is per-village and does not transfer. High Arujoki Standing has no effect at Coedwair.
  • A character can hold Rooted in multiple villages simultaneously, but maintaining it everywhere requires consistent engagement.
  • Standing is visible to local NPCs and affects their dialog. It is not a Hall credential and does not appear on the Trevalkaan board.

Trevalkaan Civic Standing

Civic Standing reflects how much the character has contributed to Trevalkaan as a community — not just their own career. It is a city-level credential that proves investment beyond routine Hall work. It does not decay through inactivity; it can only be reduced by conduct violations.

Tiers

Tier Label Threshold
0 Newcomer 0
1 Resident 30
2 Contributor 75
3 Standing Member 150
4 Civic Pillar 300

Earning Points

Action Points
Advancing one Hall rank (E through A) +10 per rank
Completing the A → S Qualification Trial +50
Funding a standing bounty +5 per 100 coin escrowed (rounded down)
Completing a village Relief Force expedition +15
Completing a major civic project in Trevalkaan +25
Publishing a first-time discovery to Archivist Gwydnila +5
Completing a Trevalkaan Hall order during an active Supply Failing state +3 (bonus)

Conduct Penalties

Civic Standing is reduced by conduct violations logged by the board system. See work-order-board.md for the full conduct mark mechanic.

Violation Penalty
Conduct mark from board (false proof, wasted multi-player slot, contraband misjudgment) −5
Three or more expired standing bounties in a row (pattern flagged by Lowenax) −10
Verified false intelligence causing a misallocated village event response −15

Unlocks by Tier

Tier Unlocks
Newcomer (0) F–E rank Hall board access only. NPC services at full price.
Resident (1) Full NPC service access at standard rate. All Trevalkaan facilities usable without restriction.
Contributor (2) Can post standing bounties on the Adventurers Hall board. Priority at Archivist Gwydnila's counter — new discovery submissions visible to the character one tick before public release.
Standing Member (3) Name eligible for display in Hall records when completing major landmark orders. Eligible for an advisory seat in town council sessions — no vote, but may formally address the council on one topic per session.
Civic Pillar (4) Can formally sponsor a major civic project (construction or infrastructure work requiring sustained resource input over multiple settlement ticks). Name inscribed on completed civic structures. Gwydnila credits the character in the codex foreword for any discovery contributing to a completed volume.

Notes

  • Civic Standing is visible to Guildmaster Bathrael, Craft Assessor Amareneka, Gate Sergeant Intixabi, and Archivist Gwydnila. It appears in the character's Hall record.
  • Civic Standing cannot substitute for Village Standing in village-specific unlock gates and vice versa.
  • A character with zero Civic Standing can still access the Hall board at their current rank — Civic Standing is a reputation layer on top of Hall credentials, not a prerequisite for basic participation.
